  • My 2nd Vaccination

    1236F835-F536-465C-8256-9136448F45CE

Hello everyone out there in Pandemicland. Howz the Covid?

Just got my second vaccination yesterday. Is that a guarantee that I won’t catch this shit? Seems like everyone is getting complacent thinking they won’t catch this. People are still catching Covid. People are still dying from Covid. So don’t count on it.

There are mutations still going on. This Covid is not yet eradicated.

I must say this shot is hurting more than the first one.

  • Hello everyone!

It’s been over a year since this pandemic began and the quarantine lockdown.

What can I say... the toughest part is the OL is out of work. Everyday I hear her anxieties of not making money. It’s driving me nuts.

With it came the lost of our health insurance. I thought it would be easy for me to get Medicare but it’s not. What good is Medicare without Medicare Part B.

I managed to begin collecting social security. An eight bills drop in the hat. But helpful nevertheless.

I’ve been spending my time hustling for food.

I have been attending senior lunches. No dine in’s. Just get take out boxes. Kimochi, centro Latino, Martinde porras, Bayview. I’ve been going to the food pantry twice a week too. It all helps in these tough times.

This was a year ago at Red’s. It was the night before the lockdown. Singing karaoke. Little did I know the lockdown would last for more than a year. I’ve been singing karaoke to YouTube karaoke vids. I must say it’s very therapeutic in these crazy times.

I wanna get a microphone, sound mixer and a speaker. But been procrastinating because of tight finances.

Dear old friend and fellow photographer, Jerry “Van” Jew, passed away. We photographed a lot of “classical” images of Chinatown. Unfortunately all his negatives were given away. He died of a terminal illness I was unaware of. Rest In Peace brother.

Dear old friend and fellow photographer, Corky Lee, has passed away. From Covid. Really saddened. We did a two man photo exhibit at the Chinese cultural center back in 1981. We met every year at the Golden Spike anniversary in Utah for the last six years. Will really miss him. Rest In Peace brother.

    • Leland Wong: I first met Leland through his We Grew Up In San Francisco Chinatown Facebook page. The page became an early source of inspiration and material for my 1st book. I would sometimes comment on certain posts and gradually got to know him through some back and forth comments and conversations. I eventually posted a request for participants for my book project and managed to get Leland to contribute anecdotes about working in his family’s Chinatown shop and his interest in art. When I decided to write my second book, I asked Leland to be its illustrator.

** So, Leland, could you tell us about your ongoing love for Chinatown and how your Facebook page has helped you share your passion for it?

  • LIFE IN SELF QUARANTINE, SHELTER IN PLACE, WORLD WIDE PANDEMIC!

    lw_sketches00037

The COVID 19 virus is upon us and the entire country is practically shut down. People are not encouraged to congregate. Many public events have been cancelled in order to contain the spread of the corona virus.

I myself have been at home for more than two weeks. I am in the high risk group. If I catch this virus the chances of me making it through it is against me. I've got all the conditions.... high blood pressure, type2 diabetes, sleep apnea, senior over 65. The fact that this virus is airborne is scary. Once in the system it can easily get into the lungs and turn into pneumonia. From which you’ll suffocate to death. Don’t wanna fk around with that!

The streets are mostly empty. It pretty quiet. Lot of places have closed down. Lot of people are out of work. The OL is out of work and all edgy. My three adult kids are here at home and are able to continue working from home from their computers. My son has come back home from the hard hit city of Seattle. His company moved to Austin. Seattle is not in a good place. He sold his condo and moved back home. I'm glad he is back.

Amazing...never thought I'd experience such a thing in my lifetime.

  • A Nasty Cough Going Around

    Nasty cough

Nevermind the corona virus... there’s this nasty cough that has been going around.

We did hotpot at home and the MIL brought the cold. I started coughing the next day. I went through three weeks of agonizing coughing.

The doctor was on vacation and the doctor in his place wouldn’t prescribe me codeine. Doctors are now discouraged to prescribe codeine because it is an addictive opioid.

So I just coughed and coughed for three weeks. Exhausted from not getting a good night’s sleep for a period. Finally my doctor back from vacation prescribed me codeine.

The cough went away for a week. After attending a Suey Sing hoi nin Party, it came back but thankfully it was only lasted four days.

I am not the only one experiencing this nasty cough. I found a lot of people have this cough.

  • Happy New Year of the Rat

    Rat year

    Gung hei fat Choi.

Congratulations get rich. Thanks the literal meaning. It doesn’t mean happy new year. Chinese are obsessed with making money and getting rich. We are reminded every lunar new year.

    So... hope I get rich.

  • Kimchi for the masses

    Two naps cabbages

    Kimchi for me

A little on the spicy side this time. Normally it would have been two cups of Korean chili flakes. I used twice that amount.
